Welcome to Your DebtMap Journey

Start your journey to financial freedom today with DebtMap

Welcome to DebtMap! We are thrilled to partner with you on your path to financial freedom. You are no longer navigating your debt alone.

  • Your guide: The Client Services Department will handle your entire journey.
  • Our goal: To protect your assets, lower your interest rates, and give you peace of mind.
  • Next steps: Review the simplified guide below to understand exactly how your debt review works.

1. The debt review process guide

2. PDA information sheet: How your money is distributed

To ensure total transparency, your monthly installments are not paid directly to DebtMap. Instead, they are collected and paid out safely by an independent, legally registered entity.

  • Our appointed PDA: We use Hyphen PDA (www.hyphenpda.co.za).
  • Their role: Hyphen PDA takes your single monthly installment and automatically breaks it up, distributing the exact negotiated amounts to each of your credit providers securely.
  • How to read your statements: Every month, Hyphen PDA sends you a statement via email.
    • Total received: Check the top balance to confirm your full monthly payment was logged.
    • Split breakdown: Look at the rows below to see the exact Rand amount transferred to each specific creditor.
    • Declining balance: Watch the remaining balance drop month-by-month as payments are made.

3. Your key responsibilities as a client

For your debt review to remain legally compliant and successful, you must commit to the following rules:

  • Pay consistently: Make your restructured payment every single month on or before your specified due date. If you miss a payment, creditors may immediately cancel the agreement and take legal action.
  • No new debt: Do not apply for, accept, or use any new credit cards, retail store accounts, or personal loans. Taking out credit while under debt review is strictly prohibited by law.
  • Forward creditor communication: If a creditor calls or sends you letters via mail or SMS, do not panic. Simply take a photo or screenshot and forward it to our Client Services Department immediately. Let us do the talking.
  • Be honest: Provide complete and accurate details about all income, expenses, and debts.

4. Your rights under the National Credit Act (NCA)

The National Credit Regulator ensures you are protected throughout this process.

Your rights:

The right to a non-discriminatory, confidential evaluation of your debt.

  • The right to receive an official statement from your PDA every month showing how your funds were split.
  • The right to be protected from creditor harassment or asset repossession while paying your negotiated installment.

Your responsibilities:

To disclose all active debt obligations honestly when applying.

  • To cooperate fully with your debt counsellor during information verification.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Can creditors still contact me or call me?

In the first few weeks, automated collection systems might still call you.

  • If they do, simply tell them: I am under debt review with DebtMap. Please contact my debt counsellor directly.
  • Hang up and notify us. Once the system updates, the calls will stop.

What happens if I miss a monthly payment?

  • Your legal protection depends entirely on your payments.
  • Missing even a single payment breaks the restructured agreement.
  • This allows credit providers to instantly pull out of the process and initiate legal action or repossession.

How long will my debt review process take?

  • The overall timeline depends entirely on the total amount of debt you owe and how much you can afford to pay each month.
  • On average, most plans run between 36 to 60 months to clear your profile entirely.
